Photographer of the Month - September

Finding the unique and unexpected while traveling sometimes does happen unexpectedly but
usually it requires some research and planning ahead. When we think of Italy we think of the
iconic images of historic architecture, hilltop villages and rolling landscapes.
ln April of 2024 on my last visit to Lucca, Italy I found out about the Lucca Tattoo Expo. Not
quite knowing what to expect I called a taxi and made my way outside of the historic wawalls
to the convention center.
The Lucca Tatoo Expo is annual celebration of body art and piercing. This year will be the 14 th
year and features over 200 professional artists from all over Italy and abroad. Most artists book
their appointments months in advance via instagram or email. This is a three day event. Some
booths will accommodate walk ins for smaller flash art tattoos vvhich are pre-drawn designs
chosen off the wall or book catalogues, not customized.
I had a wonderful day wandering the corridors filled with booths. Everyone was friendly and I
had no issues photographing. Many spoke English but simple sign language requesting
permission was no problem. lt was a fascinating day.
